HOME STUDY
Distance learning education courses or programs may be offered by traditional bricks-and-mortar universities or colleges, by "virtual" Home Study and online institutions whose entire offerings are online, by online consortia, or by for-profit institutions. The University of London was the first Home Study University to offer distance education degrees, establishing its External Program in 1858. In Australia, the University of Queensland established its Department of Correspondence Studies in 1911 joining the pioneering Home Study. Another pioneering institution was the University of South Africa, which has been offering Correspondence Education courses since 1946. In New Zealand, Home Study or extramural study began in 1960 at Massey University.
The largest distance education university in the United Kingdom is the Open University, founded 1969. Spain's Public UNED (wich is not an Open Home Study University) was founded in 1972. In Germany, the FernUniversität in Hagen was founded in 1974 to compete with other Home Study Institutions. There are now many similar Home Study alternatives around the world, often with the name Open University (in English or in the local language). More than a dozen of them have grown to become Home Study Institutions housing more than 100,000 students.
